At the March 25 DSA Cold Call I was honored to receive the “Outstanding Service to Student Clubs” award. I was so surprised by the recognition that evening that I was left speechless. Several hours later, my voice returned and I would like to share with you the thoughts that I wish I had expressed that night.

The roots of my commitment to community go back to my graduate student days at Cal Berkeley. Although the word community was freely used, I rarely felt its presence. Its absence became so troublesome that I transferred to Hopkins, despite being “all-but-dissertation,” and essentially started over. At that time I vowed to myself that, if I were to pursue an academic career, I would truly walk the talk of community.

I challenge each of you who have felt the Darden community to commit yourselves to promoting and nurturing community within the organizations to which your careers will take you.

All the best,
Sherwood
